Footprints & Groundsheets
The first step in protecting your tent is using a tent footprint or groundsheet. Providing an extra layer between yourself and the ground, our tent groundsheets shield the base of your tent from mud, rocks, and general wear and tear that can cause punctures or rips. It’s an effective way to prevent costly damage to the more expensive part of your setup - your tent itself. Our selection includes options from a variety of brands, including Vango, Outwell and Outdoor Revolution. When selecting a groundsheet for your tent, if a tent-specific option isn't available, opt for one that is 5-10 cm smaller than your tent's total dimensions. This prevents any overhang, which could lead to water pooling beneath your tent.
What is a tent footprint?
A tent footprint or groundsheet is a separate piece of material that protects your tent’s base from the wear and tear of various terrains. Another advantage of using a footprint is that if you pitch your tent on a muddy field, you can still pack it away in good condition—leaving only the footprint to clean when you return. They’re usually made with durable, waterproof materials and designed to be slightly smaller than the tent’s floor. While not a necessary piece of kit, it's a small investment that offers significant benefits, extending the life of your tent for years to come.
Tent groundsheets at Outdoor Action
Using a tent groundsheet provides an additional layer of insulation. By creating a barrier between your tent floor and the cold, damp ground, it helps to keep the interior of your tent warmer and drier, improving your overall comfort. A footprint will also make packing away much easier. Instead of having to clean a muddy tent floor, you can simply clean off the footprint. It is much easier to wipe down and dry a footprint than the entire tent base. For most family-size tents and backpacking, you can also now buy a groundsheet specifically for your tent.
